Set Your Mind at Ease with Laser Dentistry | Palm Harbor Dentist

laser dentistry

As a good rule of thumb, visiting the dentist at the beginning of a new year will not only start it off on the right foot, but it can also let you know just how much you celebrated during the holiday season. Unfortunately, many patients are nervous about a dental visit because of fear. The sound of the drill, the pain we visualize – there are plenty of reasons patients skip out on regular dental visits. Thanks to laser dentistry, patients can now choose to go for virtually pain-free dental procedures. Take a look at the benefits:

Better accuracy and precision. Procedures done on the bone and gum tissues are also more precise using lasers, which leaves the surrounding areas unaffected and helping you maintain your natural set of teeth for a longer time.

Greatly reduced trauma. High-speed drills can cause fractures in the teeth that will eventually lead to further dental problems and costs down the road. With lasers, trauma is significantly minimized.

Faster and more efficient procedures. The use of lasers can make it easier for them to perform certain procedures that would usually require multiple trips in one visit, and those that often required a specialist can now be performed by a single dentist, saving you time, money and hassle.

Less bleeding and swelling. For many years, bleeding and post-op swelling were common in dental procedures. With lasers, dentists can perform procedures such as soft tissue with little to no bleeding and post-op swelling involved.

Versatility. Those that required the extensive use of drills and scalpels, such as decay removal, cavity preparation, root canals, and many others will be far easier to do all thanks to lasers.

Fix the Flaws with Dental Veneers | Palm Harbor Dentist

Obtaining the ‘perfect smile’ seems to be on the mind of a lot of patients nowadays. There are so many cosmetic procedures, how do you know which one is for you? To be fair, only a dental professional can tell you that. Not all patients are the same. But there is one option that is quite versatile for many dental issues – porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are fabricated from a solid piece of porcelain. They fit over the front and underside of your tooth covering the entire surface of visible tooth. Veneers can be fitted to lengthen or widen teeth to close gaps or fill in chips.

How can veneers help you? Veneers can enhance the color and or shape of your tooth or teeth. Veneers are capable of providing a natural tooth appearance, but outside of the cosmetic benefits, veneers do the following:

  • Gum tissue tolerates porcelain well.
  • Porcelain veneers are resistant to stains.
  • The color of a porcelain veneer can be selected such that it makes dark teeth appear whiter.
  • Veneers offer a conservative approach to changing a tooth’s color and shape-veneers generally don’t require the extensive shaping prior to the procedure that crowns do, yet offer a stronger, more aesthetic alternative to bonding.

Modern porcelain veneers tend to last many years, are easy to care for, provide a very natural appearance, and offer a stronger alternative to other cosmetic options. Veneers won’t erase pre-existing issues – therefore an exam is needed to determine if you are a good candidate for veneers. If you find that your smile could use the benefits of veneers, contact your dentist for an appointment today!

When You Can’t Get Your Teeth Whitened | Palm Harbor Dentist

When You Can’t Get Your Teeth Whitened

Believe it or not, but everyone isn’t a good candidate for teeth whitening procedures. Tooth-colored fillings, crowns or bonding on your front teeth are going to remain the color that they are, so they will make them stand out against your freshly whitened smile. If this is the case for you, there are alternative options, such as veneers or dental bonding, that you may want to look into.

Dental veneers are thin pieces of porcelain or plastic that are bonded to the front of your teeth to improve their appearance or function. Veneers can aid in improving teeth that are severely discolored, chipped or misshaped. Stain-resistant, this treatment option is very popular for people looking to have a perfect smile. There are two types of veneers:

  • Porcelain. This option is fabricated in a dental lab to fit your teeth and typically requires two office visits. Porcelain veneers costs a bit more but will last from 15-20 years, depending on your dental hygiene routine.
  • Composite. This type of veneer is bonded to your tooth enamel in a single visit. Composite veneers cost much less, but only last around 5-7 years.

Dental bonding uses a tooth-colored composite resin to restore teeth that are chipped or broken, slightly gapped, discolored or misshapen. Bonding can also be used as a cosmetic alternative to silver fillings. After applying a mild etching solution that slightly roughens the surface of your tooth and allows the bonding material to adhere, your dentist will apply the composite resin and will begin to sculpt and shape the bonding material. Following the sculpting, your dentist will use a high-intensity light to harden the material and then finely polish the restoration.

How Can I Whiten My Smile? | Palm Harbor Dentist

Everyone has heard of teeth whitening and it seems like everyone is doing it. It is a current, and long running dental trend as well as a frequently asked for cosmetic treatment. We all desire that dazzling bright white smile, but many aren’t sure which route to take to obtain it. There are a few different methods to whiter teeth from toothpaste to professional services.

There are many brands of toothpaste that claim to whiten teeth, and stores sell all varieties of tooth whitening products – trays, gels, strips, and rinses – over the counter. The most basic form of teeth whitening is available as toothpaste – toothpaste, whether it’s labeled as whitening or not – typically contains small abrasive components that gently polish the surface of your teeth, removing discoloration caused by surface staining.

Dentists, however, can typically offer two different whitening options. The first is take-home tray based, using chemicals stronger than over-the-counter trays, but working on the same basic principle. Often times dentist provided trays are custom-molded to the patient’s teeth, providing a smooth, comfortable fit suitable for wearing for multiple hours each day – often even overnight.  Beyond the trays, dentists can often perform whitening in the office, using light and heat activated bleaching chemicals, providing a significant whitening in as little as 60 minutes. Because the procedure is supervised by a dentist, much stronger chemicals can be used, and much more dramatic results can be seen almost immediately.

No matter which method of teeth whitening you choose, the results will likely not be permanent. Your teeth are exposed to foods and drinks that will stain them over time, but your dentist can advise you on the proper procedure for repeating the whitening process at regular intervals.

Sleep Your Way to a Healthy Smile | Palm Harbor Dentist

For some of us, going to the dentist is a rather frightening thing to think about doing. There are plenty of reasons one would be nervous about, sitting in the dental chair, and it is a very common fear for many patients. Thankfully, there is help that can get you through these checkups so you can have a healthy smile, regardless of your dental anxiety.

Sedation dentistry, also referred to as “sleep dentistry”, uses medication to help ease and relax patients before or during their dental procedure. There are many methods that can be used in sedation dentistry, and the method used depends on the patient’s needs. Here are the four most common methods of sedation dentistry:

Nitrous Oxide. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is combined with oxygen and inhaled through a mask over your nose. This nitrous oxide helps calm the patient’s nerves. This method requires little recovery however, you will still need to have someone drive you home.

Oral sedation. The night before a procedure, the patient will take an oral medication to ensure that you’re calm and relaxed during the procedure. The recovery time for this method is a bit longer, so a ride home will be necessary.

IV sedation. This method is considered to be moderate to deep sedation. This type of dental sedation is administered into the bloodstream, which results in immediate relaxation.

General anesthesia. The strongest method of sedation is general anesthesia. During this type of sedation, the patient cannot be easily awakened until the effects fully wear off. Because it will take a while, making arrangements for a ride home will be wise.

Bonding: Fast and Easy Smiles | Palm Harbor Dentist

When considering a smile makeover, one treatment option to consider is dental bonding – a fast, easy way to correct a number of minor dental aesthetic issues. A tooth-colored synthetic resin is bonded to the tooth, allowing the dentist to adjust the shape, spacing, and color of teeth to correct chips, cracks and other smile issues. In some cases, bonding can even be used as an alternative to traditional fillings, or to protect a tooth’s root in cases where a gum recession has exposed portions of the tooth that would normally be protected.

Bonding is generally considered to be fast and painless – a typical procedure requires less than an hour per tooth, and often does not require anesthesia. The dentist will begin by matching the color of the resin to the shade of the tooth, then lightly etch the surface to help the resin adhere to the tooth, before applying the clay or putty like resin and molding it to match the surface of the tooth. In some procedures, the resin will be molded to fill cracks or chips where the original tooth is no longer available, but it can also be used to cosmetically extend teeth to correct gaps between teeth, or make teeth appear longer for a more aesthetically pleasing smile. Once the dentist has shaped the resin, it is hardened in place with a special light, leaving it permanently bonded to the tooth.

Unlike some other dental procedures like bridges, bonded teeth do not require much in the way of special care. While the bonding resin is not as strong as a natural tooth, it should be brushed and flossed like normal teeth, and often lasts for many years.

Gum Disease Prevention During a Pandemic | Palm Harbor Dentist

We are constantly getting news about how our world is changing by the day. Makes things feel very up in the air, but there are some things we can do to help keep ourselves grounded during this shaky time. Keeping up our daily dental routines will not only prevent future issues with your smile, but will also help prevent gum disease, which can lead to lot of other issues down the line. Thankfully, there are ways to easily prevent periodontal disease:

Brushing your teeth. The number one way to prevent periodontal disease is to brush after every meal. Avoid brushing only twice a day and have a toothbrush handy. Brushing after every meal prevents plaque from building up in the mouth.

Floss. Flossing is extremely important in preventing periodontal disease because it removes plaque and bacteria that accumulates in the mouth.

A mindful diet. Your diet is key is preventing periodontal disease. For this reason, make the proper substitutions. Replace sodas and junk food with water and veggies.

In extreme cases, patients experience bleeding gums and permanent tooth loss. Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria buildup in the mouth which aids in the formation of a sticky plaque on teeth. Plaque is extremely harmful to individuals because if hardened, patients risk the formation of tartar, which cannot be removed by brushing or flossing. By preventing or treating periodontal disease, you will not only save a significant amount of time and money, but your will save your smile from decay and permanent loss.

Sleep Your Way Through Dental Appointments | Palm Harbor Dentist

sleep dentistry

Having a healthy mouth is important, but for many of us, there are fears helping us avoid the dentist. Take a moment to ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is your fear of the dentist stopping you from receiving dental care that can improve your oral health and smile?
  • Are you anxious about visiting the dentist?
  • Are you afraid that you might constantly fidget during a dental procedure?

If you have answered yes to the following questions, it is possible that you have what is widely known as Dental Anxiety, or DA. But you need not worry – you aren’t alone. Dental fears are a common reaction to visiting the dentist. Thankfully, the dental industry has developed treatment options that can resolve those fears you may have through the use of sedation dentistry. Dr. Lieberman uses sedation treatments for your dental care because “your comfort and peace of mind are important to us. To help you with a relaxing, stress free dental visit we offer several different types of sedation.” Dental professionals will generally offer three types of sedation – which is used depends on the patient’s needs. These sedation preferences include:

Oral conscious sedation. This option allows patients to take a safe and effective pill prior to the appointment. It is handy to have a driver around afterwards.

Nitrous oxide gas. Also known as laughing gas, this alternative gives you relaxed feeling while receiving treatment, but will wear off quickly once the procedure is complete.

IV sedation. The most intrusive of the options, this option allows patients to be completely unconscious while receiving treatment through medication administered by needle.

What Are Dental Lasers? | Palm Harbor Dentist

laser dentistry

Being scared of the dentist is a legitimate fear, called dental anxiety. Many times, this will prevent patients from seeking proper dental care. For many, the root of their fear lies in the pain. For others, it is just the sounds that give them issue. Fortunately, there have been lots of technological developments that have taken place that have addressed these issues. One of these developments is laser dentistry. While not commonly associated with dental treatment, lasers have been used in dentistry since the early 1990’s.

Dental lasers can help the patient calm their nerves in order to experience a smoother, less stressful dental visit. During traditional dental drilling, the cause of pain is related to heat, vibration and pressure. Lasers do not produce heat, vibration or pressure, making it nearly pain free.

One of the most common uses of dental lasers is as a tool to kill bacteria – the laser is powerful enough to kill bacteria beneath the surface without removing the tissue, in order to treat infected or diseased tissue that would otherwise be difficult to reach with normal tools.

The dental laser provides a number of advantages for both patient and dentist – the laser is quieter than the drill, allowing the patient to enjoy a more relaxed experience. The bacteria-killing nature of the laser and its more precise use can lead to better results and shorter healing times. When used by a trained dentist, the dental laser is a fantastic technical advancement that both patients and dentist can appreciate.

If you feel like you suffer from some type of dental anxiety, rest assured dental lasers will be used to give you the best dental experience possible.
