Why You Should Consider Dental Implants | Palm Harbor Dentist

When we have a flawed smile, we visit our dentist for help. But depending on your circumstances, your treatment options will be tailored to fit your needs. If dental implants are an option, don’t shy away from the idea. Today’s technology has made incredible advances, and these replacements are better than ever.

Dental implants are artificial tooth replacements that resemble a tooth of a group of teeth. Most commonly used for individuals who have cracked or even missing teeth, dental implants provide a multitude of advantages to any individual looking to create a beautiful smile! Here are some of the advantages of considering dental implants:

Versatility. Though dental implants have their own single purpose in replacing missing or cracked teeth, they may also serve as an important part in other restorative procedures. A tooth implant can support a dental crown, as well as dental bridges.

Naturalness. Most individuals look to dental implants because they are the closest to natural that fake teeth can get. These days, your dentist will design these implants to look and feel the most natural that they can be, even taking the time to get the color right so that they blend in with your natural teeth. No one will know the difference.

Confidence. People who suffer from missing teeth are oftentimes uncomfortable with their appearances and tend to refrain from smiling at all. This can not only affect your days but can begin to take a toll on your demeanor. Because dental implants are so natural looking, one’s confidence should be restored, especially when flashing a smile.

Don’t Worry About that Dental Procedure | Palm Harbor Dentist

If you’re one of the many people who suffer from dental anxiety or sensitive gag reflex, any kind of dental procedure is very troubling. But that doesn’t mean you can skip out on going to the dentist. The good thing is, your concerns have been heard and there is good news. Modern dentistry now has many ways to ease a patient’s fears and help relax them during treatments. There are many people that deal with dental anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex or just fear of the dentist in general – and the solution is sleep dentistry.

For people that avoid the dentist due to dental anxiety or a sensitive gag reflex, sleep dentistry may be the perfect solution. Many dental professionals use the term “sleep dentistry” when referring to IV sedation. This terminology can be confusing to some, as it suggests that the patient would be asleep during the dental procedure. In reality, patients actually remain conscious and are able to respond to requests during IV sedation. However, patients sometimes don’t remember much or anything at all. This is due to two reasons:

IV sedation induces patients into a deep relaxation and a feeling of not feeling bothered about what’s going on.

The drugs that are used for IV sedation produce either partial or full memory loss from the time it’s administered until it wears off. This will make it seem as if time is passing quickly. Patients won’t be able to recall much or anything at all.

So, as you can see, there is nothing to worry about. Make that dental appointment and get that procedure done. You won’t even know it happened.

What to Expect when You Need Veneers | Palm Harbor Dentist

One of the techniques dentists use to correct the appearance of teeth is veneers – thin, custom made shells that are placed on top of existing teeth, fixing discolorations, gaps, chips, and broken teeth. While veneers and bonding are cosmetic procedures used to treat similar problems, veneers may be a better alternative in cases where the patient wants to adjust the size or shape of the tooth.

A normal procedure typically requires multiple visits – on the first visit, the dentist will inspect the tooth (or teeth) to make sure the patient is a good candidate and verify that veneers will properly fix the problem at hand. During this first visit, the dentist will remove a thin layer of tooth enamel, so that the veneer surface rests even with the rest of the teeth. Once the enamel is removed, the dentist will make a detailed impression of the tooth and send the impression off to a laboratory for a custom veneer designed to fit the tooth precisely. The dental laboratory can make the veneer using either porcelain or resin – porcelain veneers are more natural, resin veneers requiring less enamel removal.

Once the veneer is created, the patient will return for a second visit to continue shaping the veneer before it is bonded to the tooth surface with permanent cement. In many cases, the patient will be asked to return in a few weeks to evaluate the gums and make sure the patient’s gums are reacting well to the new veneer surface.

Modern porcelain veneers tend to last many years, are easy to care for provide a very natural appearance and offer a stronger alternative to other cosmetic options.

Which Type of Wrinkle Do I Have? | Palm Harbor Dentist

Whether we like it or not, nothing slows down time. We grow up and we get old. One of the symptoms of that is the appearance of wrinkles. But did you know there are more than one type of wrinkle? According to the researchers at the University Hospital of Liege, Belgium, there are four distinct types of wrinkles. Let’s break it down:

Atrophic crinkling rhytids. Atrophic crinkling rhytids are the result of the loss of elasticity in the skin, usually parallel to one another. They can show up almost anywhere on the face and body but may ‘disappear’ when you move your body. Moisturizers can minimize the appearance of these kinds of wrinkles.

Permanent elastic creases. These crease lines that may become permanent over time, especially with sun overexposure. They show up often on the cheeks but can also appear on the upper lips and the base of the neck. Use sunscreen when outside and stop unhealthy habits such as smoking.

Dynamic expression lines. Wrinkles that are the direct result of facial muscle movement are known as frown or smile lines and crow’s feet. Botox is a type of injectable wrinkle treatment that these types of wrinkles are known to respond quite well to.

Gravitational fold lines. As gravity and time takes its toll on the human skin, it begins to fold and sag. It’s been theorized by researchers that having a plumper face can help minimize gravitational folds compared to that of a lean face. Face lifts and other types of cosmetic surgery are the only options as far as this type of wrinkles goes.

When we think about the ideal smile, most of us turn to our favorite celebrity. For some reason it seems like you need a perfect smile to make it big. But what you may not realize is that those celebrities have had some type of dental work done to get that perfect smile. That dental procedure? Dental implants.

Dental implants are artificial tooth replacements that resemble a tooth of a group of teeth. Most commonly used for individuals who have cracked or even missing teeth, dental implants provide a multitude of advantages when designing that smile you’ve always wanted. Here are the top three reasons you should consider dental implants to achieve that Hollywood smile:

Versatility. Though dental implants have their own single purpose in replacing missing or cracked teeth, they may also serve as an important part in other restorative procedures. A tooth implant can support a dental crown, as well as dental bridges.

Naturalness. Most individuals look to dental implants because they are the closest to natural that fake teeth can get. Get Wiser About Wisdom Teeth | Palm Harbor Dentist

Wisdom teeth – the third and final set of molars in the rear of your mouth – are one of the least predictable teeth. Unlike other teeth, it’s not uncommon for wisdom teeth to be absent. Even more unusual, while some people have all four wisdom teeth, other people have only one, two, or three – and there seems to be no reliable predictor to determine how many wisdom teeth any given patient has prior to being x-rayed by a dentist.

For many people, the presence or absence of wisdom teeth is irrelevant – you can certainly live a full life with or without wisdom teeth – unless they’re present and problematic.

In many cases, wisdom teeth crowd other molars, grown in misaligned, or only partially erupt from the gum. Crowding can cause pain, tenderness, and further alignment issues with other teeth. In extreme cases, the wisdom teeth can grow in horizontally. In other cases, they can remain impacted – partially erupted through the gum, leaving the gum tissue broken. This condition allows bacteria to enter the gum tissue, surrounding the tooth where it cannot be brushed or flossed, and can lead to significant decay of the tooth itself, as well as periodontal disease as the infection spreads to the surrounding gum tissue.

If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort near the back of your mouth, or if you’ve been told you have wisdom teeth that may be problematic, speak to your dentist about the various options available to you. Extraction may not be necessary, but it’s also possible that extraction could be a simple way to relieve pain and pressure caused by wisdom teeth.

When You Aren’t a Candidate for Teeth Whitening Treatments | Palm Harbor Dentist

Believe it or not, teeth whitening isn’t recommended if you have tooth colored fillings or crowns on your front teeth because the whitening gel cannot change the color of these types of dental materials. And since most of us have some type of dental work like this done, what do we do to get a bright smile? In such cases, patients may want to look into alternative options, such as veneers or dental bonding.

Dental veneers are thin pieces of porcelain or plastic that are bonded to the front of your teeth to improve their appearance or function. Veneers can aid in improving teeth that are severely discolored, chipped or misshaped. Veneers are stain-resistant to classic stains, making them a very popular option for people looking to have a perfect smile.

Dental bonding uses a tooth-colored composite resin to restore teeth that are chipped or broken, slightly gapped, discolored or misshapen. Bonding can also be used as a cosmetic alternative to silver fillings. After applying a mild etching solution that slightly roughens the surface of your tooth and allows the bonding material to adhere, your dentist will apply the composite resin and will begin to sculpt and shape the bonding material. Following the sculpting, your dentist will use a high-intensity light to harden the material and then finely polish the restoration.

Several patients choose bonding over silver fillings due to it looking more natural. The material can be match to your natural tooth color, but because the bonding material is more porous, smokers will see that it yellows.
